About Ian
I’m an Assistant Professor at Tennessee State University, an HBCU in Nashville, Tennessee. I earned my Ph.D. in political science at the University of Colorado, Boulder with specialization in American politics and research methods. Between 2021-2023, I was Postdoctoral Civic Engagement Fellow at The Brennan Center for Justice in NYC.
My research and teaching interests are guided by two questions: “how do our social and political information environments shape us?” and “how can the people get control of government?” But the best part of my job is handing students the tools and confidence to address puzzles related to their own burgeoning interests. I am especially dedicated to effective teaching of quantitative research methods at the undergraduate level. In some cases, I’ve worked with students to translate these skills into conference presentation and campus-wide research competitions.
My published research focuses on American political behavior, voting rights, and misinformation. I primarily work with vignette survey experiments, but have an interest in conjoint experiments and survey design. My recent work appears in Political Behavior and The Journal of Politics (conditionally accepted version) .
In my free time, you can find me cycling, baking desserts (probably pies), listening to podcasts/audiobooks, and playing with my Airedale Terrier (Rory).
